Hamerton Zoo Park is saving over £5000 a year with a 6 year payback

The Background
Set in 25 acres, Hamerton Zoo Park houses over 500 animals from over 100 different species, particularly focusing on lemurs, cats and birds. The park has always aimed to be carbon neutral or better and already invested in Solar PV, Wind Turbines and a small biomass system, but the zoo wanted to provide hot water to more buildings on site.

In June 2015, Abel Energy installed a containerised biomass system, chosen due to the lack of plant room space on site. An 80kW Froling P4 biomass boiler and buffer tank is housed within a 20ft container, with an external 7 tonne steel silo. Locally sourced wood pellets are blown into the store and sucked through to the boiler via flexible suction tubes.

The biomass system provides heat via 138m of district heating to 6 buildings – houses for flamingos, monkeys, anteaters, sloths and a quarantine area, plus a new nocturnal house due to be opened for the 2016 season.
Hamerton Zoo Park now claims the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) which is guaranteed by Ofgem for 20 years. The quarterly income from the RHI, combined with the fuel savings of installing a biomass boiler offers Hamerton Zoo Park a payback of just 6 years and savings of over £5000 per year.
